SKISS sub-project with the educators at the Vallmon kindergarten in Norsborg.
I began my work with excursions to places where I had carried out previous art projects in Alby and Vårbygård.
On these excursions we were able to get to know each other and talk about their work and what an art project could mean in terms of form and content.
We talked, among other things, about the psychological work environment, professional status and whether art could change anything.
At the following meetings at the kindergarten, opinions were expressed about the outdoor environment and that suggestions for improvements had been submitted to those responsible at the municipality, but without result.
The suggestions seemed well thought out and logical measures for obvious problems in the staff’s daily work tasks.
I suggested that we together develop a new presentation of the wishes for changes to the yard.
I made a model and some children populated it with self-portraits in clay and we came up with suggestions for play equipment made from recycled materials.
Among the measures the staff suggested was a request to cut down some poplars that cast shadows and obscured the view, which in turn led to the yard becoming a hangout for vandalizing youth gangs. The poplars were cut down and the trunks were used for a number of different low play equipment, which did not have such high safety requirements.
A dragon was sculpted with a chainsaw in collaboration with one of the municipality's park workers.
A number of other measures were carried out in the kindergarten yard, including painting patterns, labyrinths, jumping courts and traffic markings with white marking paint based on the children's sketches on the asphalt walkways.
